The aim of Yoga Therapy is to promote good health for the person as a whole - the emphasis of this work may be towards the body, the mind, the emotions or a combination of these.

Yoga therapy is an integrated mind-body approach for restoring balance and adaptive functioning to the physical (musculoskeletal), physiological (digestion, respiration, cardiovascular, endocrine and immune), and mental / emotional systems.

Yoga therapy may be used to:

  • reduce symptoms of illness or injury

  • establish more functional breath and movement patterns

  • reduce physical and mental suffering

  • improve quality of life

Yoga Therapy may be used in an individual, one-to-one session or in small therapy groups and will usually include practising a series of postures specifically designed around the health needs.

Jo Withers

Jo Withers

As a yoga therapist I apply the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being carrying out a full personalised assessment to devise an individualised practice that supports the process of healing.

Drawing on my expertise in Nutrition/ Dietetics and yoga therapy, I specialise in supporting people living with stress, anxiety, low mood, IBS and back pain. Together, we can work to improve your dietary habits and movement practices in a way that has shown to reduce symptoms and support overall wellbeing, helping you live a happier, healthier life.

As a yoga therapist I refer to the Panchamaya model (5 layers of the human system) to understand how you are experiencing your health problem and from this assessment I will agree and design a specific individualised practice with the recommendation of practising this as frequently as possible.  The frequency of sessions will vary from weekly/ fortnightly to monthly.

What does a yoga therapy session involve

The first session is up to 1.5hrs, and I will gather all the necessary information including your range of movement to inform a bespoke practice devised around your individual needs for you to take home and practice.  I will also include diet and lifestyle recommendations.
